Devil Daggers is a delightful little indie title in the vein of games like Geometry Wars (2003) and Asteroids (1979), but masterfully mixed with the original Quake (1996). You play as the unnamed hero, armed only with your magical hand that shoots – nay, spews – daggers. Your mission is to survive for as long as possible against endless waves of Lovecraftian demons, ranging from flying skulls with horns, and giant spiders made of bones, to flying snake skeletons. Did I mention there were tentacles? Well, there are.
This is a very simple game, but that does not make it a simplistic game. It’s a beautifully crafted shooter, that looks and feels just as we remember the shooters from the mid 90s. While it doesn’t offer much variety in its gameplay, what it does do, it does really well. If you spent any time at all playing Quake 20 years ago, this game will surely feel right at home. I can only hope the developer furthers this concept and makes a full-fledged game out of it in the future – and maybe, just maybe, we’ll see something that resembles a true-to-roots singleplayer experience with a multi-level campaign.
